Curt is a hero known as the Reflector.

History[]

Origins[]

Curt is a student at the university when he answers a newsletter for a psychological study on campus. The lab is working on a machine able to transfer emotions from one brain to another, in order to work on therapy techniques or empathy training. Curt and another student, Aaron, are placed on each side of a wall, not knowing who the other one is. The machine is supposed to transfer Curt’s emotions into Aaron, but something goes awry in the laboratory and the machine starts beeping and shuddering. They both get nervous, but still think that the scientists know what’s happening. The scientists do not know what’s happening, and the machine explodes, pushing backwards the both of them. They are rushed out of the lab separately, after the scientists made sure that they were okay, and having apologized and asked them to not tell anyone what happened. However, something is wrong with them. Curt feels a little blank and empty, and when he starts talking to friends and family about what happened, he realizes that he can take in and feel their emotions intimately, while his own emotions feel bland. He also realizes that he can reflect back a person’s emotions, amplifying or tweaking them in the process ; and becomes a hero known as the Reflector.

Falling in love with Kristin McMoney McNicholson[]

Overwhelm starts committing crime with the help of his powers, and the Reflector often tries to stop him, resulting in Overwhelm being punched in the jaw. Overwhelm typically ends up escaping by laughing very loudly, which the Reflector can’t do. Later, Aaron, who was robbing a bank, is stopped by Curt, with the help of a very pretty young bank teller who tells him Overwhelm is hiding behind the counter. After the fight, Overwhelm escapes, and both Aaron and Curt decide they are in love with the bank teller, named Kristin McMoney McNicholson. Kristin chooses Overwhelm over the Reflector, who then decides to take a vow of celibacy, shouting it out loud every time he stops a crime, saying “That’s it, evil-doer ! Also I’m celibate !” before leaving. On the other hand, Overwhelm has never been happier (as well as sadder or angrier or guiltier). Curt can’t stand seeing him so happy, and secretly uses his powers to infuse jealousy into Kristin, who starts taking out her anger on Overwhelm. From that point on, Aaron goes from petty villain to global-level villain, getting in touch with the Tailor for a new supervillain costume.

Creating the DM[]

The Reflector has a friend called Jose, whom he is worried about because he has become bitter lately, has seen Joker in theaters 5 or 6 times, and thinks the movie gets what society is about, calls people NPCs, becomes alienated from society, lashing out at people. Curt has been friends with him since high school ; trying to get through to him, he proposes that they start playing tabletop roleplaying games together, a good sociable activity. They play together in an OnO group, Jose runs the game, and they use the Oubliettes and Ogres system, a new system, real hardcore gaming stuff. Curt thinks to start using his Reflector powers to reflect out what’s left of humanity in Jose, but it doesn’t work ; he feels like his energy is being absorbed somewhere else, and he doesn’t understand what’s happening. The Reflector’s powers of reflecting reality where actually inflicted on Jose’s Oubliettes and Ogres character sheet ; and Jose realizes he can now create fantasy characters with his character sheets, who then stand there like automatons, waiting to be controlled by him giving them orders in the way he would talk in a RPG. If he gives an order, he then has to roll a d20, and the action depends on the dice’s result. He also realizes that in order to level up characters, he needs to make them kill weaker creatures, maybe by robbing banks, and killing some NPCs. He starts going by the name of "The DM".

Targeting the Backup General-Later[]

The Reflector has realized that he can reflect back into the universe literalised versions of abstract ideas, such as when he created the DM by literalising his character sheets. He realizes that with these new powers, he might be able to make more converts than just emotionally amplifying people. and decides his first target is going to be the Backup General-Later. He sneaks into his compound, where he is asleep in the couch, in front of the TV playing. The popcorn kernels are in a bowl next to him, and the Reflector uses his powers on them, causing an explosion. Whereas before there were about sixty tiny popcorn kernels in army uniforms, there are now sixty full-grown Channing Tatums in uniform, standing bewildered in the Backup General-Later’s living room. He wakes up, and the kernels salute him, before looking at each other and realizing that they don’t have to salute this guy anymore, as he always treated them terribly. A line of sixty Channing Tatums marches out the door, Curt hidden among them, stealing the Backup General-Later's power of popcorn kernels.
